ART PARTY | Mike Etie | Monday, March 13, 5-7

It’s almost springtime, but Hyde Park Bar & Grill at Westgate is celebrating bright colors and warm sunlight a little early with the work of local artist Mike Etie! A fabulous Art Party will be held at the Westgate location on Monday, March 13 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Come out to meet the artist, view his work, and enjoy a complimentary appetizer buffet and drinks at Happy Hour prices!

Mike Etie’s medium of choice is generally soft pastel, but he also uses other techniques, including painting and giclée, a form of computer-generated art. His images capture striking landscapes in bold colors, many of them from Texas Hill Country and other areas of this great state. As he states on his website, “I strive to capture the intensity of emotional response that describes the way one feels as he sees the sun move quickly at the beginning and end of each day…Of course, the sun rises every day, but never appears the same exact way. The appreciation of that daily difference is one of the blessings we are given without any obligation – we have only to notice and enjoy.”
Mr. Etie’s works will be on display on the “island” at Hyde Park Bar & Grill at Westgate (4521 Westgate Blvd., Austin) from March 11 through May 5. You can see more of his art at http://mikeetieart.com/.

We are thrilled to be displaying the work of local artist Darryl Freeman at Hyde Park Bar & Grill at Westgate! Mr. Freeman’s paintings range from sunny, colorful landscapes full of brilliant details to introspective, somewhat-stylized images of women going about their daily lives, each captured in a beautiful, fleeting moment. “I try to create some positive energy about my paintings,” the artist says on his website, and we can attest that he succeeds! Come brighten your day with delicious food and splendid paintings at Hyde Park Bar & Grill at Westgate, now through April 25.

New at Hyde Park on Duval: Cumberbatch Sweet Tater Torte!

In honor of both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and a longtime friendship, Hyde Park Bar & Grill on Duval will offer slices of Cumberbatch Sweet Tater Torte this week for $4.50 a slice.

Described by Austin American Statesman food writer Addie Broyles as “unique …The cakelike crust on the bottom and top envelop a sweet, smooth and buttery sweet potato filling,” the torte is handmade with love by Jennifer Cumberbatch. In the 1980’s, Jennifer’s husband Ashton played basketball at Enfield Park with Hyde Park Bar & Grill founder Bick Brown. The 3 cooked up the idea of Jennifer using Hyde Park’s commercial kitchen to make her tortes, which are, in her words “baked from the heart: it is memory, a tribute to those who have gone before, love emanating from the work of my hands, and an ode to family fellowship and the community table.”

After a few years of Jennifer baking the pies, and Hyde Park selling them by the slice while she sold the whole, life took another turn for the Cumberbatches and they put Jennifer’s pie business on the back burner in favor of leading a congregation.

But life has a way of coming full circle, especially when it comes to pies. So when Addie Broyles asked Bick about an article she was writing about Jennifer Cumberbatch’s return to sweet potato torte making, a phone call between Jennifer and Bick stirred their interest in having the tasty, historically-based dessert once again at Hyde Park Bar & Grill.
