thru Aug 7 – Circle Mirror Transformation at HPT

Check out this video trailer for Circle Mirror Transformation, still selling out fast at Hyde Park Theatre!

Circle Mirror Transformation trailer

Hyde Park Theatre is in the ‘hood and we’re a sponsor so we’re claiming their shows as events for our original location on Duval in Central Austin!

Circle Mirror Transformation at Hyde Park Theatre -- the hottest ticket in town!

Act fast if you want tickets to this play!  It’s been a sell-out every night since it opened on July 8 at Hyde Park Theatre right here in the motherland of all Hyde Parkness, the actual, genuine Hyde Park neighborhood.  Reviewers like Spike Gillespie and the Austin American Statesman can’t say enough good things about it.  Funny, great pacing, jaw drop ending — what’s not to like?

We would, of course, be missing a huge opportunity if we didn’t invite you to come by our Duval location before or after the show to have a bite and bit of conversation.  It’s a 15 minute stroll from our door to theirs.  Lots of picturesque houses and B&B’s along the way.

Circle Mirror Transformation

8/3 Bluesday Tuesday w/ Jimi Lee Featuring Ben Stevens

Although summer may be ending soon, it doesn’t mean you’ve run out of great things to do!  If you are looking for something to spice up a regular ole Tuesday night, it’s time to be introduced to a “killer” duo.  On August 8th, Bluesday Tuesday will take on a whole new meaning of “soulful blues”.

Ben Steven performing his blues

Ben Stevens is no rookie when it comes to music, in fact you may have heard him in Bleecker St., one of Colorado’s most acclaimed blues bands which he actually started!

Not only is Ben a fantastic guitarist, he also has something which is becoming excedingly  rare: Heart.  Ben puts heart into his music because that’s what makes it blues.  That’s what makes him a true artist.

Check out the link below, and we’re convinced we’ll see you on August 8th…Ben Steven’s music speaks for itself.

8/4 Art Party for Felice House & Dana Younger

We have two new artists coming to Hyde Park Duval to show us their skills.  Meet  Felice House and Dana Younger.  Two amazing artists with extraordinary talent.

Felice fell in love with color and representation as a high school student in the woods of British Columbia.  She then traveled to Canada for shows. She ended her time in Canada with a solo show entitled “PUTTING IT ON…and taking it off”. In this show she used painting, printmaking and installation to exaggerate classical ideas of femininity to the point of comedy. Each piece provided an in-depth look at the way that society molds females’ expectations of themselves.  Felice started Housepaintings Studio, an artists’ space in downtown Bryan, Texas.   Through the studio Felice began to teach weekly drawing and painting classes as well as weekend workshops.

Dana Younger, VP of Blue Genie Art, is truly a man for all seasons.
Besides being a painter, sculptor, mold maker, and computer artist, Dana is one of the chief innovators at Blue Genie Art.  His fascination with the creative process and all types of materials keeps Blue Genie Art on the cutting edge.  Essentially, he is a one man research and development team.  However his art is what makes him memorable.  His talents include oil paintings, digital art, encaustics and acrylic paintings. There are a variety of styles: figurative work, abstract expressionism digital art and landscapes.  Whatever he creates is sure to be beautiful, deep and unique.

His name is Mark Campbell and he does practically everything with master skill.  Whether it’s blues, country, or even Latin music, he plays with conviction and soul on his guitar or piano.  He started Soulshaker after highschool but has lately been playing weddings.  However he still strives for that elusive sound , the ultimate goal of making music “magic”.

8/18 House of Hits, Meet the Authors Party

In House of Hits, Andy Bradley and Roger Wood chronicle the fascinating history of Gold Star/SugarHill, telling a story that effectively covers the postwar popular music industry.

House of Hits chronicles Houston's music powerhouse Sugarhill Studios

Founded in a working-class neighborhood in southeast Houston in 1941, Gold Star/SugarHill Recording Studios is a major independent studio that has produced a multitude of influential hit records in an astonishingly diverse range of genres. Its roster of recorded musicians includes Lightnin’ Hopkins, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Junior Parker, Clifton Chenier, Sir Douglas Quintet, 13th Floor Elevators, Freddy Fender, Kinky Friedman, Ray Benson, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child, and many, many more.

Bradley and Wood describe how Houston’s lack of zoning ordinances allowed founder Bill Quinn’s house studio to grow into a large studio complex, just as SugarHill’s willingness to transcend musical boundaries transformed it into of one of the most storied recording enterprises in America. The authors offer behind-the-scenes accounts of numerous hit recordings, spiced with anecdotes from studio insiders and musicians who recorded at SugarHill. Bradley and Wood also place significant emphasis on the role of technology in shaping the music and the evolution of the music business. They include in-depth biographies of regional stars and analysis of the various styles of music they represent, as well as a list of all of Gold Star/SugarHill’s recordings that made the Billboard charts and extensive selected historical discographies of the studio’s recordings.

We’ll have Andy Bradley and Roger Wood on hand at the party and it’s anybody’s guess as to who else, since they know every musician that ever set foot in Texas!!!

Come meet ‘em, have a snack, buy a book if you want one, and hear a juicy story or two…
