3rd Sundays – Bluegrass with AIRCARGO

Get your Bluegrass fix every 3rd Sunday with AirCargo.

Enjoy the hot picking and lush harmonies of AirCargo on the 3rd Sunday of each month from now for awhile on .....

AirCargo is the trio of music prodigies Ray Cargo, Randy Collier and Kevin Willette.

They perform pure acoustic music of bluegrass influence and instrumentation.

Between the 3 of them, they have a combined one hundred twenty-five years of musicianship.  (These are the kind of guys who can play anything with strings. And, with Randy being the former president of the Old Settlers Music Festival, we figure he knows a thing or two about music.)

So come on by, 7 to 9 pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month from now until we decide not to do it anymore! (or until it gets cold in November, whichever happens first)

Balcony TV Recommends…Lauren Silva

Lauren Silva plays at Hyde Park Bar & Grill south at Westgate on Tues, May 22 as the first artist in our series of artists recommended by Balcony TV Austin

BALCONY TV RECOMMENDS…. LAUREN SILVA.

The first time she appeared on Balcony TV Austin, Lauren impressed the producers with her sultry voice.  In her second Balcony TV appearance, she wowed us them as much with her original song.  And she’s easy on the eyes, too, if you haven’t noticed.

We recommend you save this date, and check back with us.  We don’t know when Lauren will be whisked off by some major label or entertainment company!

Balcony TV is a little ol’ online music video show that started in Dublin, Ireland in 2006 and is now in more than 30 cities around the world, from Atlanta to Vienna, garnering millions of views. The Austin show has been going strong now for more than a year and they’re recommending artists to play at Hyde Park Bar & Grill.

Click here to view her Facebook page.

To make those evenings even better, Tuesdays is a Tony’s Southern Fried Chicken night, too!

JITTERBUG VIPER SWING! Last Sundays, March – Oct

You may not know how lucky you are.   But trust us, you are lucky indeed if you can visit Hyde Park Bar & Grill in South Austin at Westgate Shopping Center on the Last Sunday of the month beginning March thru October*.

Because those are the nights we’ve booked The Jitterbug Vipers, arguably the best jazz and swing band from McAllen to Kansas City.

The Jitterbug Vipers play Hyde Park Bar & Grill South, last Sundays, Mar - Oct

What do they sound like?   Imagine a dimly lit nightclub in 1940′s Chicago. Wes Montgomery, Ray Brown are jamming with Count Basie.   They meet up with Jerry Garcia in a dark alley. Then things get really smokin’ hot….you might say they get…SWINGADELIC. Vintage jazz, swing, it’s hot, sultry, and danceable, influenced by Billie Holliday, Charlie Christian and Count Basie’s rhythm section and the 30s & 40s Viper scene.

Check out the Jitterbug Vipers on the last Sunday of each month starting in March through Oct;  Sarah Sharp, vocals (Berklee grad — think Billie Holiday, Ricky Lee Jones, Nina Simone); Slim Richey, guitar (Austin’s most dangerous guitarist); Francie Meaux Jeaux, upright bass (ever-colorful and entertaining, she loves Ray Brown); and drummer Masumi Jones, (Berklee grad aka Geisha Girl Gone Wild)

You, however, will not be in a smokey bar.  You’ll be on our pretty patio, under the stars and party lights, dining and dancing in the fresh air as the Vipers strut their stuff.

Chicken Fried Chick-A-Thon with Natalie Zoe

On the Last Tuesday of each month, March – June, come celebrate the Chicken Fried Chick-A-Thon with Natalie Zoe.

Natalie Zoe hosts Chicken Fried Chicken Chick-A-Thons, Last Tuesday of the month, Mar - June

What’s a Chick-A-Thon?  It’s a celebration of the feminine in music.  Each week, Natalie will feature one other of her favorite musician friends.

Natalie Zoe (left) & A Featured Guest will charm your socks off on Chicken Fried Chick-A-Thons, Last Tuesday - Mar - June

You see, Mz Zoe is one powerfully connected chickadee.  Are you glad there’s no smoking in Austin bars?  That musicians can park and unload on 6th Street? That we have cool concerts downtown for free?   Then thank Natalie, because she played a big part in getting all those things to happen.

Besides being a rabble rouser and master of making stuff happen, she’s a music-maker, too.

As a songwriter, Natalie speaks Truth, and it’s often the truth as it pertains to women in particular — about love, live, loss, happiness, and bout taking The High Road because it’s the the only road that leads to peace.

And of course, since Tuesdays are one of our two Tony’s Southern Fried Chicken Nights, we couldn’t help but make that Chick-A-Thon connection.

Calico Jazz Trio, 2nd Sync-o-pated Sundays, April – Nov 2012

In music that has a groove, it’s never on the one.  It’s on the two.  And so it is with our 2nd Sync-o-pated Sundays series.

Calico Jazz Trio is a chill ride to a place where the jazz is hot and the players are cool jazz cats. It’s beatnik jazz for the new millenium, and not to be missed for jazz fans.

Calico Jazz Trio will play 2nd Sync-o-pated Sundays at Hyde Park Bar & Grill in 2012

Guitarist Patrick Mertens’ stylings mesh perfectly with percussionist Aaron Lemke and bassist Kai Roach’s righteous rhythms.    No vocals, just sweet notes and a groove.  Perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine and your main squeeze.

CANCELLED – Calliope Musicals…Balcony TV Recommends!

CANCELLED due to rain, dang it all!  We’ll have them back as soon as we can.

They tag their music as: “fancy indie folk rock Austin”  Yep, that describes Calliope Musicals as we heard on Balcony TV Austin.

Calliope Musicals bring their fancy, indie, folk rock to Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on Tues, May 15, 7 to 9pm

Preview their sound in their Balcony TV Austin appearance HERE.

Calliope Musicals began as the musical love child of singers Carrie Fussell and Philadelphian Matt Roth (affectionately known by native-Texan Carrie as “Yankee”). Their chemistry was undeniable, and their passion for the music gave them an instant friendship. After dancing holes into the bottom of their feet during a performance by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros at 2009’s SXSW, they knew that there was no choice but to pursue a musical career together.
In search of “general merrymakers,” the two happened upon Craig “The Funk” Finkelstein: vibraphone player extraordinaire. Luckily The Funk was willing to give up his place as the top seller in a kissing booth to chase rainbows with the Musicals.
The threesome decided that while they were stunning alone, it did prove problematic that no one in the band could actually keep a beat. This is when they met Jason Martin, and when he kept insisting that the group practice while wearing funny hats, they knew that they needed him and his brilliant ideas.
In need of a bass line, the Musicals challenged another local band to a duel. The prize? The wickedest bass player in all the land: Ben Aiken. Needless to say, because the duel was judged on good looks, dance moves, and all-around excellence, the Musicals won over the bass virtuoso.
The music makes Calliope Musicals (and listeners) happy, alive, and free. Their live performances have an energy that puts them in a league above most other folk-rooted troops, and the songs generate a happy sensation not found in most other indie/rock bands. After seeing them at one of their debut performances in Austin, Texas at Threadgill’s, Western Homes said they “sound like big ol’ state fair, country rock entertainers,” and entertain you they will. They emulate an energy that cannot be replicated even in the best recordings, and they have a sound that leaves listeners with no choice but to fall in love.

Gina Chavez

If you don’t know Gina Chavez, you are in for a treat.

Gina Chavez is the bomb. She'll be at Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on Tues, June 19, 7 to 9pm.

Gina is ” the Joni Mitchel of Latina music.”   Enough said.  If you want to add some salsa to that statement, let’s just say she’s been featured on National Public Radio’s Alt Latino music show and crowed about in both the Austin Chronicle and Austin 360.

Our sweet corn and cheese tamales, a tasty vegetarian treat, are ideal for snacking as you listen to the music of Gina Chavez.
