CANCELLED – Calliope Musicals…Balcony TV Recommends!

CANCELLED due to rain, dang it all!  We’ll have them back as soon as we can.

They tag their music as: “fancy indie folk rock Austin”  Yep, that describes Calliope Musicals as we heard on Balcony TV Austin.

Calliope Musicals bring their fancy, indie, folk rock to Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on Tues, May 15, 7 to 9pm

Preview their sound in their Balcony TV Austin appearance HERE.

Calliope Musicals began as the musical love child of singers Carrie Fussell and Philadelphian Matt Roth (affectionately known by native-Texan Carrie as “Yankee”). Their chemistry was undeniable, and their passion for the music gave them an instant friendship. After dancing holes into the bottom of their feet during a performance by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros at 2009’s SXSW, they knew that there was no choice but to pursue a musical career together.
In search of “general merrymakers,” the two happened upon Craig “The Funk” Finkelstein: vibraphone player extraordinaire. Luckily The Funk was willing to give up his place as the top seller in a kissing booth to chase rainbows with the Musicals.
The threesome decided that while they were stunning alone, it did prove problematic that no one in the band could actually keep a beat. This is when they met Jason Martin, and when he kept insisting that the group practice while wearing funny hats, they knew that they needed him and his brilliant ideas.
In need of a bass line, the Musicals challenged another local band to a duel. The prize? The wickedest bass player in all the land: Ben Aiken. Needless to say, because the duel was judged on good looks, dance moves, and all-around excellence, the Musicals won over the bass virtuoso.
The music makes Calliope Musicals (and listeners) happy, alive, and free. Their live performances have an energy that puts them in a league above most other folk-rooted troops, and the songs generate a happy sensation not found in most other indie/rock bands. After seeing them at one of their debut performances in Austin, Texas at Threadgill’s, Western Homes said they “sound like big ol’ state fair, country rock entertainers,” and entertain you they will. They emulate an energy that cannot be replicated even in the best recordings, and they have a sound that leaves listeners with no choice but to fall in love.

Balcony TV Recommends … Dawn & Hawkes – CANCELLED FOR RAIN!

This show Cancelled for Rain — we’ll have them back as soon as we can!

Miranda Dawn is a talented young artist with a knack for making stuff happen.

Dawn & Hawkes play Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on Tues, May 8, 7 to 9pm

She won our hearts in her Balcony TV Austin appearance with Miranda Dawn & The Lucky Break Horns, and on Tuesday, May 8 she’ll appear at Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on with the equally talented Chris Hawkes.  This songwriting duo draws on their independent careers as solo performers;  deeply rooted in the lone star state’s mix of influences in folk-rock, country,  rhythm & blues. The two met while dancing in a legendary blues juke joint, in Austin, and later began songwriting and touring together as Dawn & Hawkes.  Performing as a duo or with their full band, Dawn & Hawkes combine harmonies, crafted lyrics and stories with a charming chemistry on stage.

Check out their song Forever Happily here!

In 2011, each independently released solo albums: Chris Hawkes’s “Broken Record” and Miranda Dawn’s “Reason to Feel Alive”. A collaborative debut, featuring co-written material the two crafted, mostly while on tour together, is soon to be released.

Miranda Dawn & Chris Hawkes both outstanding writers and performers in their own right, have teamed up to create a performance that multiplies their talents” (Daren Appelt)

The two voices intertwine as if made to sing together” (Serenity Fisher)

Phoebe Hunt at Hyde Park Bar & Grill south – May 6!

The phabulous Phoebe brings her phiddle and lovely self and songs to Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on May 6, 2012.

Phoebe Hunt plays the patio at Hyde Park south on May 8.

Once again, count yourself lucky if you’re able to attend this show.  We showcase music early in the week, early in the evening so folks with early schedules can experience some of Austin’s finest talents.  Phoebe Hunt fits the bill.

She’s added her unique sparkle to bands such as The Hudsons, The Belleville Outfit, and recorded with Warren Hood.

Now she’s got some songs of her own to share, and she’s got something to say.

We suggest pairing the Phoebe Hunt Project with something healthy, invigorating, and slightly intoxicating — our  Eggplant with Fettuccine would be ideal: Breaded eggplant cutlets served with egg fettuccine, creamy vodka sauce, fresh basil pesto and shredded parmesan.  $9.95  Add a glass of a fabulous white wine or some fresh squeezed lemonade.  Finish with one of tonight’s home-baked desserts, perhaps the Blueberry Peach CobblerAn individual cobbler with a filling of sweet blueberries and peaches, topped with a flaky home made crust.

Ulrich Ellison – Tuesday, April 10 — catch him before he heads to Europe!

Ulrich Ellison will play Tuesday, April 10

Ulrich is a native of Austria who fell in love with the blues and electric guitar at an early age.  He says he came to Texas as fast as he could to play the blues and get away from polka! :)

Ulrich is a 3time winner of the Downbeat Guitar Solo award, college division.

And he’s one humble and charming  guy, something that doesn’t always go along with great guitar-playing!

Come hear Ulrich before he heads across the pond for some European shows — enjoy world class guitar and eat some world-class Tony’s Southern Comfort fried chicken, too.

Ulrich Ellison – jazz / blues / fusion / rock — 7 to 9pm @ the Westgate location.

Edison Chair – music on the patio, Sunday, April 1

We ain’t foolin’ on this one.   Edison Chair will play the patio at Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on Sunday, April 1.

Edison Chair plays Hyde Park Bar & Grill south on April 1!

These guys first came to our attention a few years ago at a teen band event, where their harmonies and songwriting made them a standout.  Now Martin AkerWill BryantWes Armstrong and Cord Jackson of  Edison Chair have a few more years on them and a lot more tunes to share with you.

An energetic four piece rock band from Austin Texas, Edison Chair honors the style of timeless rock such as The Who and The Beatles, while making innovative strides in the wake of popular modern bands such as The Fratellis and Oasis. Formed in 2007, the band quickly attracted attention from multi-platinum producers and major labels such as Interscope Records. With three part harmonies and songs you’ll be singing long after the show, Edison Chair has developed a sound that will be hard to forget.

Balcony TV Recommends….Chase Gassaway + Jordan Whitmore

For our second Balcony TV Recommends… show, we present 2 artists:  Chase Gassaway & Jordan Whitmore.

Chase Gassaway is the 2nd artist recommended to us by Balcony TV

In his Balcony TV Austin performance, Chase Gassaway made impressed the producers enough to garner a recommendation from them for our series.

Originally located in Arlington, TX, Chase moved to Abilene, TX in 2003 to study music composition and theory at Hardin-Simmons University. Having formally only worked under other efforts as a hired gun, it wasn’t until then that he pursued his solo career in music.

Studying under Dr. Bernard Scherr, Chase polished his chops as a composer, creating works for a variety of ensembles ranging from chamber music, choir, percussion ensemble to full orchestra.

He studied classical guitar privately under Dan Mitchell for 3 years and voice with Dr. Kecia Ashford for 2 years, but has been seen performing a variety of things on stage including – electric/acoustic guitar, keys, bass, percussion, harmonica, accordion, bells, and trombone.

His first commercial release of original music was the Black As My Coffee EP in 2005 featuring his songs and his first stab at studio orchestration.

In 2009, he and his wife, Kassie, moved to Austin, TX, where he is now a full time, working musician. Besides his solo efforts, he is a regular member of Nathan Hubble’s band and a Motown cover band called MatchMaker Band.

In the fall of 2010, he was commissioned to score the short film, Take Two directed by Matthew Tibbenham. The score contained works for string quartet, mixed folk ensembles, and pop songs.

In the winter of 2011, he formed Canaries In The Coal Mine with fellow songwriter Jordan Whitmore. Their first project was a Christmas album called Scarf Weather, which contained originals and holiday favorites.

Jordan Whitmore will join Chase Gassaway for our 2nd Balcony TV Recommends ... show

Chase suggested Jordan Whitmore as a second act for the evening for which we invited him to play.  Jordan will make her Balcony TV Austin appearance in April, in advance of this writing.  If you haven’t heard of Jordan Whitmore, it’s not because you’re out of the loop. Until she made her subtle entrance into the world of live performance just two years ago, the Dallas native primarily shared her musical talents with only those closest to her. Previously an ultra-timid pop singer/songwriter, Jordan has since pushed beyond her own personal boundaries to share her music with the greater Austin area.

Balcony TV is a little ol’ online music video show that started in Dublin, Ireland in 2006 and grew to be in 30 cities around the world, from Atlanta to Vienna, garnering millions of views. The Austin show has been going strong now for more than a year and they’re recommending artists to play at Hyde Park Bar & Grill.
