8/31 Bluesday Tuesday with Jimi Lee featuring Whitey Conwell

Okay Hyde Parkers, it’s time for another new face and sound!  Accompanying Jimi Lee on Tuesday is Whitey Conwell.   Jimi’s just one of those guys with a sixth sense for who’s good and who you oughta know.

Whitey Conwell plays a lot of instruments. But not all at once.

Richard Meltzer of the San Diego Reader says Whitey’s “…an ace of a blues/rock/rockabilly guitarist, Whitey sings/speaks/croaks with a voice from the timeless land of cigareets (sic) and whiskey, and at least the memory of wild, wild wimmen (sic)…”.  Life – The daily Dose informs his every move, gives even his rigor a flexibilty, a subtle nuance, a shading.”

Sounds good to us.  Just one question:  Did his mamma name him “Whitey?”  You’ll have to come to the show to find out!

Bluesday Tuesday, Aug 25, w Whitey Conwell & Jimi Lee

7:30 – 9:30

Hyde Park Bar & Grill, south

9/3 – 10/10 Polter and Neema Art @ Duval

You say you don’t know art, but you know what you like?

Check out these works by Robbin Polter and Ziya Neema:

Robbin Robertson Polter's "My Austin"

"Who Dat, Mardis Gras" by Ziya Neema

Now if those paintings don’t lift your spirits and stir your chili, nothing will.

We’ll have the lively, colorful and joyful paintings of Robbin Polter and Ziya Neema on display at Hyde Park Bar & Grill in the Hyde Park neighborhood — 4206 Duval — from Sept 4 to Oct 10.

Meet the Artists’ Party – Wed, Sept 8

4:30 – 6:30

About the Artists:

Ziya Neema

I paint big, loud, Afro-Caribbean inspired paintings on hand sewn crazy quilt canvases. Having been born in Tanzania and raised in the Virgin Islands, I try to depict the vivaciousness and spice of life in the tropics. I want my lush colors and intense patterns to initially draw you in. At first glance it may appear to be just another happy day in paradise, but upon closer examination you may begin to see the signs of chaos.

I love to collect fabrics from my world travels (39 countries and counting) and sew them into my canvases. My favorite pieces are from vintage Dhow sails I bought in a fishing village on the coast of Zanzibar. The sail texture is sea baked, sun kissed, and hand stitched. These random seams and lines inspire me to create unexpected divisions through my paintings.

My current work is becoming bigger, bolder, and more complex.  I am building and painting frames to extend the intensity of my work, polishing my craftsmanship, and developing my conceptual intent.

Robbin Robertson Polter

Robbin, local Austinite, a native Texan , and Texas A&M graduate is a multi-media contemporary folk artist working with canvas, wooden and metal collages and photography. Her portfolio is colorful and whimsical emphasizing a folk art style.  While using available art supplies she prefers found objects, scraps and recycled materials giving “life back to trash” .  Robbin paints on board, recycled frames or cabinet doors then easily moves into 3D creations out of metal, glass, found pieces & wood. She has a difficult time painting flat for too long …the figures want to rise out of the board and become 3-D . She prefers patterns on patterns, details, layers of color and has found inspirations from her travels in Europe, Latin America, Asia, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. More specifically inspired by the folk art & textiles in Guatemala, Mexico,Peru and Haiti. She is a 4th generation folk artist and inspired most by her years making art with her mother Mary – a wood worker & folk artist. She has displayed and sold her art in Texas, California, New York, Washington, New Mexico,  Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. See www.robbinrobertsonstudios.com for more paintings and her blog with show updates
