Laura Caffrey’s Rubbish Revival Art Show

“When I was five, my family moved into the house where my grandmother had been born. The house had minimal electrical service, plumbing was limited to a single cold-water tap in the kitchen and heat was delivered by three coal stoves. Built around the turn of the last century, the house was an example of what is now politely called “vernacular” architecture, cobbled together from available materials. It was dark, filled with heavy, dusty old furniture and even dustier carpets. The unfinished basement was stocked with ancient canned fruits, mysterious medicinal preparations and rusty tools. The newspaper insulating the living room wall had an article reminiscing about the not-long-ago President Grant, family portraits hung under domed glass in tiger-striped oval frames, and buttons and bottle caps of several generations of my thrifty and resourceful ancestors filled rusted tins. This seemingly endless supply of bizarre old things was precious to me.
We lived at the end of a dirt road and if I managed to convince other kids’ parents to drive them to our house, I would spend most of our time together showing them all of my treasures. Many decades later, I find myself in a similar position. I find beauty in the intentionally discarded and the inadvertently abandoned, the crumpled and cracked, and the back sides of things. The detail and attention once lavished on the smallest item is not something many people now get to appreciate. I still play with the new stuff, too, but I get great joy from showing people all of the wonderful bits and pieces they may not have had the opportunity, or taken the time, to notice.” ~Lara Caffrey

6/30 (Duval Location) Bwana Doc Book Signing Benefiting The Audubon Society and REEF

When stuff like devastating oil spills happens, do you find yourself fantasizing about having unlimited funds, super-duper scientific smarts, weaponry expertise, and international connections so you could go fix the problem while giving the perpetrators their due?

Meet Bwana Doc, international environmental pirate, the man who does what it takes to end the destruction of our planet!

Bwana Doc is one bad-a** environmentalist

The creation of author/ biologist / entrepreneur / UT prof D.R. Schneider, Bwana Doc is James Bond, millionaire Bruce Wayne, and Captain Morgan all rolled into one.   And he’s on a mission to save the earth.

(In real life, Bwana Doc’s creator is a real-life environmental hero.   His company, Micro-Bac Int’l, uses microbes to eat up crude oil.  His Facebook public profile here and his enviro-blog here.)

We’re hosting a book signing for Bwana Doc’s first published adventure, SAVING THE WHALES on Wed, June 30.

Now here’s the gospel truth about this event:  it was planned before the Oil Spill.   But,  as the plot — or perhaps we should say the Gulf — thickens, the need to do something about the worst environmental catastrophe in the US has become excruciatingly clear.

This event will benefit two environmental organizations: The Audubon Society and REEF.

About the book:

Hyde Park Fork has read it and says it’s a real page-turner.

Not only is it a satisfying high adventure story with an underlying good cause, it also [spoiler alert] features Hyde Park Bar & Grill in the story.

(While HPB&G is undoubtedly an internationally-known destination, our appearance in the book is largely because the author is a devotee of our Duval Street location.)

You’ll get a signed book in return for a donation to the Audubon Society and/or REEF, a grass-roots organization that seeks to conserve marine ecosystems, and we’ll have something cool for those who correctly answer trivia questions about the book.

Book Signing for SAVING THE WHALES, A BWANA DOC ADVENTURE

Hyde Park Bar & Grill, central – 4206 Duval

June 30

Time:  5 to 7pm

Complementary hors d’oeuvres, cash bar at happy hour prices

Minimum $10 donation (feel free to give more!) to the Audubon Society and/or REEF gets you a signed book, not to mention the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing something to help correct the worst environmental episode in US history.

Hyde Park Bar & Grill prizes for those who answer our Bwana Doc trivia questions correctly, so get the book by clicking here and start reading!

Now thru 4/23 It’s Wine for Trees Week!

There may never be a better reason to drink wine.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Hyde Park Bar & Grill is offering Trinity Oaks Pinot Grigio and their Pinot Noir for just $5 a glass and $19 a bottle.

Drink Trinity Oaks' wine at HPB&G to help plant trees.

What’s special about that — besides some very decent wine at a great price — is that Trinity Oaks has the One Bottle One Tree program.  For every bottle they sell, they plant one tree.

Come see the new Fork art.

The new Fork art is up!

Artist Dale Whistler (creator of much iconic Austin public art) created “a wind-powered, kinetic musical piece that celebrates nature, made primarily of recycled and re-purposed materials .”

We celebrated the new art on Saturday, April 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at our Duval location.

Artist Dale Whistler was on hand for the unveiling and did some cool cariacatures for some cool kids!  More to come . . .

You, too, could become a cariacature. Stop by Sat for the Fork Art party and get one free.

Fork Art Celebration

Saturday, April 17

4:00 – 6:00pm

Complementary caricatures by artist Dale Whistler

Plus:  Trinity Oaks’ wine for $5 a glass, $19 a bottle — a tree planted for every bottle sold.

4/22 Earth Day – Eat for Trees!

We just can’t plant enough trees these days.

On Thurs, April 22, Earth Day 2010, we’re partnering with American Forests and will contribute a percentage of sales from both locations to plant trees.

Eat at HPB&G on Earth Day & we'll plant trees with American Forests

Depending on sales that day, that could be a whole bunch of trees.  Come eat and know that you’re doing something to make the planet a little nicer when you do.

Eat For Trees
