VIPER SWING! Last Sundays, March – Oct

You may not know how lucky you are.   But trust us, you are lucky indeed if you can visit Hyde Park Bar & Grill in South Austin at Westgate Shopping Center on the Last Sunday of the month beginning March thru October*.

Because those are the nights we’ve booked The Jitterbug Vipers, arguably the best jazz and swing band from McAllen to Kansas City.

The Jitterbug Vipers play Hyde Park Bar & Grill South, last Sundays, Mar - Oct

What do they sound like?   Imagine a dimly lit nightclub in 1940′s Chicago. Wes Montgomery, Ray Brown are jamming with Count Basie.   They meet up with Jerry Garcia in a dark alley. Then things get really smokin’ hot….you might say they get…SWINGADELIC. Vintage jazz, swing, it’s hot, sultry, and danceable, influenced by Billie Holliday, Charlie Christian and Count Basie’s rhythm section and the 30s & 40s Viper scene.

Check out the Jitterbug Vipers on the last Sunday of each month starting in March through Oct;  Sarah Sharp, vocals (Berklee grad — think Billie Holiday, Ricky Lee Jones, Nina Simone); Slim Richey, guitar (Austin’s most dangerous guitarist); Francie Meaux Jeaux, upright bass (ever-colorful and entertaining, she loves Ray Brown); and drummer Masumi Jones, (Berklee grad aka Geisha Girl Gone Wild)

You, however, will not be in a smokey bar.  You’ll be on our pretty patio, under the stars and party lights, dining and dancing in the fresh air as the Vipers strut their stuff.

Ash- Blaize 10-23-11

Since childhood, Ash- Blaize has been singing and playing the keys. Ash-’s move to Austin eight years ago from southern Indiana brought him to coffeehouses and clubs around town playing solo, and later as co-frontman for Talk Means Trouble. Solo, now, and with the help of backing musicians Ben Haskin (bass) and Stew Lane (drums), Ash- presents his style and influencesduring live shows. At every Ash- Blaize show, you can expect a mix of keyboard driven ballads and dance infused pop songs, resonating vocals, and an amazing performance. Influences for Ash- Blaize include Tori Amos, Ben Folds, Imogen Heap and many others. Ash- Blaize released his debut album Letters To Andrea October, 21 2008. [Ash- Blaize website]

Calico Jazz Trio 10-16-11

Calico Jazz Trio is a chill ride to a place where the jazz is hot and the players are cool college-age cats.   Guitarist Patrick Mertens’ stylings mesh perfectly with percussionist Aaron Lemke and bassist Chris Ritchie’s righteous rhythms.    No vocals, just sweet notes and a groove.  Perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine and your main squeeze.

Sarah Pierce Band 10-9-11 CANCELLED

“Wow, here’s a young comer that has captured the industrial side of Emmylou Harris and has a better handle on it than Harris. While it’s always rough to follow in someone’s footsteps, the world wise Pierce brings her own stuff to the table and makes you wonder how the majors have missed out on her.” – Midwest Record Recap

“The first thing that jumps out at you when listening to Sarah Pierce is that voice. It’s powerful and emotional, a little bit country, and a little bit rock and roll. Pierce’s voice has been compared to Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith, Joni Mitchell and Shawn Colvin. That’s pretty impressive company.” – Suite 101

“SARAH PIERCE: One of the queens of the back 40, part singer/songwriter, part folk-rocker and part Austin good old girl, Pierce continues to solidify her skills. With a ton of roadwork between releases, you can feel what Pierce has absorbed along the way making each new outing a real new outing. Fueled by sharp writing and keen observation, this set is going to grab ears of singer/songwriter fans with both hands. Solid work from an artist with a lot on the ball and a lot to show for her effort.” – Midwest Record Recap

Paper Mache 10-2-11

Fun fact! PAPER MACHE features HPBnG staff!

In a culture of predictability and contrived emotion, honesty is the currency by which art is valued. Paper Mache has built its reputation on lyrical substance and continues to build a national fan base through extensive touring and inventive promotion. This Texas based four-piece creates a continually evolving sound that embraces the acoustic sparsity of acts like Bright Eyes as well as the rich textures of bands like Death Cab for Cutie and Brand New. Bluesday Tuesdays in September

JIMI LEE returns to Hyde Park Bar & Grill with new talent to shake things up at Westgate on Tuesday evenings in September. This smokin’ harmonica player and award-winning songwriter/performer has been turning heads for quite a while. In fact, the Austin music scene has already awarded him “pre-legendary” status! Click here to view his YouTube channel.

Danielle Reich

9/6 DANIELLE REICH came to Texas from Florida in 1999, where her parents launched her musical voyage by making her clap along with the radio on road trips until she had a reasonable sense of time. This led to piano lessons, a love affair with 1940s musicals, high school choir trips, and a degree in classical vocal performance from the University of Florida. She is frequently described as having the “authentic sound of a 1930s and 40s era singer.” Danielle’s eclectic musical interests have led to an adventurous repertoire, including beautiful interpretations of Leonard Cohen, Hank Williams, Bob Dylan, and other American popular artists. She also has a love of French, Spanish, and Italian music. Click here to view her YouTube channel.

Steve Carter

9/13 STEVE CARTER was born in the U.K and raised in Baltimore. He moved to Austin in the mid-seventies, and played with the LOTIONS and PRESSURE, both Austin’s premier reggae bands. Carter went on to write songs with ERIK MOLL, MICHAEL BALLEW, RON HICKS, SHANE DECKER, TRACIE LYNN, JANET LYNN and BILL COLBERT. He also won gold, platinum and DBL platinum records in Norway for artist STEINAR ALBRIGTSEN. Long recognised as one of Austin’s best songwriters, his songs have been featured on 30 CDs, in film, and on HBO. His new band is his ‘dream band’, playing his ‘Little Big band’ sound. Click here to listen to Carter’s music.

Phoebe Hunt

9/20 PHOEBE HUNT lives her life trying to make a difference in the world through her music. Hailing from Austin, Texas, and a graduate of UT, her music is a pure reflection of her life’s experiences. She toured with The Belleville Outfit from 2007-2010, playing at festivals and clubs across the country. She was awarded with the Torch Violin at her first Mark O’Connor Strings Camp in 2006. She says, “For me, the fiddle is a symbol of peace. I believe that music is the one pure force that can bridge the differences between people. Without saying a word, two people who speak different languages can find a deep connection through a single note.” Click here to watch her preform with Jimi Lee.

Dale Spalding

9/27 DALE SPALDING is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter who grew up in Downey, California. He studied harmonica with iconic bluesman Sonny Terry in San Francisco, then formed a duo with New Orleans musician Duke Burrell (Louis Jordan’s pianist) for ten years. The Dale Spalding Band was formed in Los Angeles in the early ’90s, featuring some of L.A.’s finest musicians, including James Gadson (drums), Lon Price (sax), and Bruce “Funky Mal” Malament (piano). In 2000, Dale was featured on Grammy-winning Latin Conguero Poncho Sanchez’s Latin Spirits CD. Today, he plays all over the USA, Canada and in Europe. Come, and experience a ”rich toned harmonica style and a funky gumbo of feels… a must see show!”
