Scottish artist Grant Reid draws inspiration from his adopted hometown

GRANT REID is originally from Glasgow, Scotland, now happily transplanted to South Austin.  His background is in fashion from which he attained a Masters in Fashion from Domus Academy in Milan, Italy.

Natural, candid and relaxed define Grant’s style of photography. He says “I aim to capture moments and memories for my clients through my photography and express the story and character of the subject. My personal passions are travel and people.  Photography to me is about capturing a moment in time, a split second, barely visible to the naked eye. Only when the image is captured at the touch of a button are we both dazzled and amazed by the findings.”

Facts about men’s health:

• The average life expectancy for men is five years less than women (presently 77 years old compared to 82).
• 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 3 women will be.
• Evidence suggests that about a third of the 571,950 cancer deaths expected to occur will be related to obesity, physical inactivity, poor nutrition and thus could be prevented.
• 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
• 240,890 new cases of the disease will be diagnosed and 33,720 men will die.
• Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in American males between the ages of 15 and 34.
• 8,290 men will be diagnosed with the disease and 350 will die.
• Smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths and 87% of lung cancer deaths
• An estimated 115,060 men will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 85,600 men will die from the disease.
• While not as common, men can get breast cancer. About 2,140 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among men and about 450 men will die from the disease
• The most common cancer in the US, skin cancer strikes 1 in 5 Americans.
• An estimated 43,890 men will be diagnosed with skin cancer and 8,080 men will die from the disease.
• An estimated 13 million adult men over the age of 20 in the US have diabetes- and a third do not know it.
• Approximately 50 million men and women in the US have high blood pressure- almost 30 per cent of them do not know it.
• About 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure, and blood pressure tends to rise with age.
• 1 in 8 men who suffer from mental illness actually seek help (inspire.org)
• Four times as many men commit suicide compared with women
• 24% of men are less likely to go to the doctor compared to women

The 37th Annual Fire Station Festival on Sunday, October 23 honors and celebrates the partnership between the fire station and the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, the effectiveness of citizen involvement, and those who provide great service within the neighborhood. Historically, Hyde Park’s fire station has been saved twice by neighborhood heroes!

“To portray women without objectifying them is an intentional, political act. The art historical tradition is to paint women to extol their sexual beauty and to encourage possessiveness. There is a new guard of women painters who provide a counterpoint to this tradition by depicting a more multifaceted version of the female psyche. I align myself as an artist with them by attempting to broaden the depiction of women as subjects in painting. My subjects are beautiful and observable, but not consumable. They are more public than private and more iconic than intimate. My paintings have a strong connection to traditional portraiture in both style and technique. However, my subjects are contemporized through the use of modern fashion, unexpected facial expressions, unique color relationships and photographic cropping.” ~FELICE HOUSE

Dana Younger

Dana Younger, VP of Blue Genie Art, is truly a man for all seasons. Besides being a painter, sculptor, mold maker, and computer artist, Dana is one of the chief innovators at Blue Genie Art. His Fascination with the creative process and all types of matreials keeps Blue Genie Art on the cutting edge. Essentially, he is a one man research and development team, and it was on his urging that [they] recently acquired [a] new 3D laser scanner and 3 axis CNC milling machine and our Polyurea spray equipment.

Dana also had an unusual childhood, including building and living in a log cabin without electricity (his stories of walking in the snow for miles to get to school are actually true!) and living on the Pacific Ocean in a sail boat.

Healthcare Heroes Honored by Hyde Park Bar & Grill

AUSTIN― Dr. Steven Crow and Dr. Louis Appel of People’s Community Clinic (PCC) in Austin were recognized last week as Hyde Park Bar & Grill’s 2011 “Healthcare Heroes,” winning their facility close to $1,000 in the process.

This past May, Hyde Park Bar & Grill sought to highlight outstanding community service from health and healing professionals in the Austin area by launching an online contest for patrons to nominate their most admired medical workers. As an additional token of the restaurant’s appreciation, anyone wearing scrubs on Mondays in June received a generous discount on their meal at both Hyde Park Bar & Grill locations.

“We were very excited to partner with Hyde Park Bar & Grill on this event and hope to do it again next year,” said Margaret Henkels, Director of Development at People’s Community Clinic.

Dr. Steven Crow has worked and volunteered his time at PCC since he was a young medical student at the University of Texas, serving his patients with a great sense of humanity. When he’s not there, Dr. Crow works at CommUnityCare David Powell Health Center which specializes in the care and treatment of patients with HIV and AIDS. He is extremely active in the community and has a reputation as a very giving individual.

PCC Chief Medical Officer and Director of Pediatrics Dr. Louis Appel has devoted his life to providing primary health care to some of our community’s most underprivileged and vulnerable children with dignity and compassion, consistently forming close relationships with his young patients and their loved ones. His many dedicated years to PCC reflect great humility and a deep commitment to the community.

For each vote cast, Hyde Park Bar & Grill pledged a one dollar donation to People’s Community Clinic.  Bick Brown, owner of the family establishment, presented the two Healthcare Heroes’ awards and a check donation to the clinic on July 14, 2011.

“Hyde Park Bar & Grill is committed to the Austin community and it’s our privilege to honor People’s Community Clinic. We definitely want to do this again,” said Mr. Brown.
