Your SXSW / March Madness Getaway — Hyde Park Bar & Grill Central (Duval)

The third week of March is known as “March Madness” in Austin for not one, but three major events.

You’ve got your Rodeo, March 11 – 26.

horses at the rodeo in Austin

You’ve got UIL basketball, March 3 – 12.

Longhorns vs Aggies

And you’ve got SXSW.

SXSW on 6th Street

So … where are you going to eat when you want a great chicken fried steak, a great burger and Austin’s favorite fries, or a vegetarian dish like our Eggplant Fettuccine with Vodka Sauce?

And what if you want a cozy table with Wi-Fi where you can actually hear your dining companions?

(You probably see where this is going, don’t you? )

We’re going to recommend Hyde Park Bar & Grill Central (on Duval) as your go-to March Madness / Rodeo / SXSW Sanctuary.   Your place to slip away from the madding crowd for nourishment, a glass of wine or your favorite beverage, and re-charge.

You won’t be completely away from the scene.   Our Duval-street location is just north of downtown, right on Capital Metro’s route — try the 7-DUVAL / DOVE SPRINGS-NB line.

And we’re celebrating the music madness with a fabulous display of music-themed photography & art.

Come see us.  You can even reserve a table.

Art Party for Steve Hopson!

Music begets art.

Carolyn Wonderland, photographed by Steve Hopson

Carolyn Wonderland, photographed by Steve Hopson

Steve Hopson’s photographs of musicians, now gracing our walls at our Duval location, are living proof that the soul-to-soul experience that is live music can be captured visually.  Hopson’s eye is for those fleeting moments — the kind of mental image that comes to mind when you think of a particular performer.

Check out his website HERE.

We’ll be celebrating Steve on Wednesday, Feb 23 with an Art Party in his honor.  We’re going to party down with him and toast his fine photographic art for awhile in the happiest of hours.

And Steve has an extra treat for us, too — a fiddle player to add ear candy to the eyes’ feast.

12/8 Art Party: Anne Ducote

In art, as in music and food, you want to finish with a flourish.

Anne Ducote Art Party poster

We don’t mean to disparage any of the other artists’ whose work has graced our walls in the past year.   We are grateful to all of them as their work has brought joy to both customers and staff.   Many of us have our favorites and all have been of such high quality that we have been proud to showcase their work.

You see, there’s a reason our curator, Anne Ducote, has such good taste in art — that’s because she’s is quite an accomplished artist in her own right.

We’re going to celebrate Anne and her art at our Duval location on Wed, Dec 8, 5 – 7.   Come by, see her work, meet Anne herself.  She’s nothing if not approachable.  She’s downright friendly, in fact.

Complementary snacks, happy hour drink prices, fun conversation with interesting people.

8/18 – 10/9 Art on the island …

At our Westgate location in south Austin, a 3/4 wood wall separates some of the seating.   Anne Ducote, our art curator, has taken to calling it “the island.”

As it turns out, it makes a really nice spot to display small to moderately-sized artwork.   Diners at tables for 2 and 4 sit close to the art.  It’s a different point of view, a different experience.

And now’s a good time to come check it out, because you can get up close & personal with images like this:

"Dream On" and more of William Burkhardt's photos of the Umlauf Sculpture garden are displayed at the "island" section at our Westgate location.

"Face #11" - photo by William Burkhardt

"Nice Stretch" -- photo by William Burkhardt

William Burkhardt is an artist and architect (is that redundant?), who’s lived in Austin since 1994.

Here’s what he says about his photos of Umlauf Sculpture Garden came about:

I take long walks with my camera and had wandered in there one afternoon, was completely stunned by what I found and struggled to find some way to capture something of it. I spent the rest of the afternoon there, mostly shooting faces: I’m profoundly struck by the expressive beauty, character and diversity of emotion portrayed in the sculptures – like anything complex, they demand exploration and offer themselves to a variety of interpretations. We’re lucky to have such a treasure so close to us.

We think we’re lucky to have Mr. Burkhardt share his work with us, too.

Come see it while you can.

8/4 Art Party for Felice House & Dana Younger

We have two new artists coming to Hyde Park Duval to show us their skills.  Meet  Felice House and Dana Younger.  Two amazing artists with extraordinary talent.

Felice fell in love with color and representation as a high school student in the woods of British Columbia.  She then traveled to Canada for shows. She ended her time in Canada with a solo show entitled “PUTTING IT ON…and taking it off”. In this show she used painting, printmaking and installation to exaggerate classical ideas of femininity to the point of comedy. Each piece provided an in-depth look at the way that society molds females’ expectations of themselves.  Felice started Housepaintings Studio, an artists’ space in downtown Bryan, Texas.   Through the studio Felice began to teach weekly drawing and painting classes as well as weekend workshops.

Dana Younger, VP of Blue Genie Art, is truly a man for all seasons.
Besides being a painter, sculptor, mold maker, and computer artist, Dana is one of the chief innovators at Blue Genie Art.  His fascination with the creative process and all types of materials keeps Blue Genie Art on the cutting edge.  Essentially, he is a one man research and development team.  However his art is what makes him memorable.  His talents include oil paintings, digital art, encaustics and acrylic paintings. There are a variety of styles: figurative work, abstract expressionism digital art and landscapes.  Whatever he creates is sure to be beautiful, deep and unique.
