Laura Caffrey’s Rubbish/Revivial Artwork: 9/3/11-11/19/11

When I was five, my family moved into the house where my grandmother had been born. The house had minimal electrical service, plumbing was limited to a single cold-water tap in the kitchen and heat was delivered by three coal stoves. Built around the turn of the last century, the house was an example of what is now politely called “vernacular” architecture, cobbled together from available materials. It was dark, filled with heavy, dusty old furniture and even dustier carpets. The unfinished basement was stocked with ancient canned fruits, mysterious medicinal preparations and rusty tools. The newspaper insulating the living room wall had an article reminiscing about the not-long-ago President Grant, family portraits hung under domed glass in tiger-striped oval frames, and buttons and bottle caps of several generations of my thrifty and resourceful ancestors filled rusted tins. This seemingly endless supply of bizarre old things was precious to me.
We lived at the end of a dirt road and if I managed to convince other kids’ parents to drive them to our house, I would spend most of our time together showing them all of my treasures. Many decades later, I find myself in a similar position. I find beauty in the intentionally discarded and the inadvertently abandoned, the crumpled and cracked, and the back sides of things. The detail and attention once lavished on the smallest item is not something many people now get to appreciate. I still play with the new stuff, too, but I get great joy from showing people all of the wonderful bits and pieces they may not have had the opportunity, or taken the time, to notice. ~Laura Caffrey

Staff Art Show Begins 8-28-11

Our talented staff is proud to present their works in HPBnG Westgate’s latest gallery. It will be on display until October 1, 2011. View more artwork by clicking here.

  • David Abel is a professional photographer, outdoorsman, an avid whitewater kayaker and rafter. In 1984 while studying Geology at the University of Texas in Austin, he was invited on a raft trip down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park. David was so enamored by the river environment that he has devoted most of his life traveling North America in search of remote river canyons, capturing their beauty with his camera.
  • Chris Connor was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He has spent the majority of his life in Dallas and the last seven years in Austin. Connor began painting in oils fifteen years ago, starting off as a hobby that turned into an obsession. Striving in every attempt to capture something fresh and exciting but at the same time, based upon traditional values.
  • Mackenzie Graham was an art history major at the University of Texas who focuses her artistic interest with an academic and professional lens. Her concern for art extends beyond paint and canvas, reaching into the sphere of creative exposure and engaging local audiences in physical art. With oil paint and crayon, Mackenzie displays texture and color while realizing the limitations of her medium. She uses her ability to put perception to page to heighten her audience’s view of the world.
  • Anne Ducote has resided in Austin since 1976. Over the years, travel has been a large part of her life, and as a result, her work reflects some of the beautiful places and things she has seen. Her creative endeavors have included her original paintings in oils, watercolors and pastel drawing, several print series and assorted prints, commercial work, faux finishing, murals, commissioned painting used on movie sets, portraiture, and the like. Her subjects range from the ordinary to the sublime.

Hyde Park Bar & Grill Features Art by Wait Staff

AUSTIN – Hyde Park Bar & Grill has been known for great food and service since 1982, both of which are provided by a dedicated staff. Now members of that staff will be providing another great addition to the restaurant — their own works of art.

Work from four Hyde Park Bar & Grill staffers will be displayed at the central location at 4206 Duval St. May through June.

An art party honoring the staff member artists is scheduled for May 25th from 5p.m.- 7p.m. at the Duval location with complimentary hors d’œuvres and happy hour-priced drinks.

Featured artists:

David Abel
David is an avid large format photographer and self-proclaimed river rat.. While he strives to capture the ever changing light with his 4X5 field camera, he also desires to record the human element with a less intrusive 35mm camera. Both of these formats allow David to effectively combine the spirit, emotion, and sublime beauty that flowed through those canyon walls.

Chris Connor
Chris was born and raised in Chicago, IL. He has spent the majority of his life in Dallas and the last seven years in Austin. Connor began painting in oils fifteen years ago, starting off as a hobby that turned into an obsession. Striving in every attempt to capture something fresh and exciting but at the same time, based upon traditional values.

Mackenzie Graham
An art history major at the University of Texas, Mackenzie focuses her artistic interest with an academic and professional lens.

Katie Ratkiewicz
Given a toy camera at age six, Katie grew up shooting alongside her grandfather and mother, both avid shutterbugs, and went on to study film based and digital photography under Steven DiRado at Clark University. Katie enjoys styling commonplace things into productive works of art through upcycling, decorating and cooking, and illustrates a proclivity towards industrial and abstract images in her photography.

“A Behanding in Spokane”

We love our neighborhood performing arts theater! Every production is filled with unique talent and courageous effort. And this one is no different. We encourage you to check out “A Behanding in Spokane,” by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh, playing at the Hyde Park Theatre through May 28.

This is the director’s first play set in America and already his play has people talking. The New York Times calls it, “perfect, demented, ecstatic, and imaginative.” The Wall Street Journal said, “You’ll spend 90 minutes laughing nonstop.”

Check out the trailer here!

Hyde Park Art Sells! ARTIST: Maria Lyle

At Hyde Park Bar & Grill, we like to maintain a certain level of quality, and not just with our food. Take the art we display in both locations, for example. Our art curator Anne Ducote works diligently to ensure the caliber and character of the artwork presented.

But nothing shows quality and value more than having your artwork sold. Just ask Maria Lyle. Her artwork has recently been hanging on the walls of Hyde Park’s Westgate location where two of her paintings were just sold. (shown below) We just wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate Maria on the sale. Artists like her work hard at their passion, and it’s always nice when someone else shows their appreciation of the artwork with a purchase.

If you’d like to take a look at some of Maria’s work, you can visit her website here or you can just waltz on in to Hyde Park, grab some food, maybe a glass of wine, and view all of the artwork around our restaurant.

And don’t forget to come by our Art Party for Maria, on April 20, 2011. There will be happy hour drinks from 5-7p.m. and a complimentary appetizer buffet. Don’t miss it!
