With all due respect to those who may feel otherwise, the comfort and safety of our customers is our highest concern.
Therefore, we join with our fellow Austin Original businesses including Kerbey Lane, Taco Deli, Trudy’s, Franklin’s BBQ, and Amy’s Ice Cream in prohibiting open carry of firearms at all Hyde Park Bar & Grill establishments.
David Fridlund’s collection “Remnants of Weird” captures Austin in transition.
David Fridlund isn’t a native Austinite by any means, but in his seven years as an Austin resident, the Swedish-born artist has created some of the most poignant Austin-themed art the city has ever seen.
Offering an interesting perspective as an Austin transplant who arrived at the crux of the transformation of Austin from a small, ‘weird’ city to a fast-growing “big city,” Fridlund’s “Remnants of Weird” collection strikes a chord with both new and long-time Austinites.
Hyde Park bar & Grill, an Austin-original restaurant, is pleased to host Fridlund’s Austin-themed collection as both a “celebration of life” for the city we once knew and an open-arms welcome to the newcomers of Austin.
Fridlund’s pieces will be displayed Dec 6-Jan 16, with an Art Opening Party on Dec 7th from 5-7pm. We invite all Austinites both new and “old” to come see a veritable piece of history in the making, the changing scene of Austin, recorded using colored pencils.
Death or rebirth? It’s all in your point of view.
We’ll conduct an in-depth interview with the Artist on Dec 6th, and invite you to leave any questions you have for Fridlund in the comments of this post!
FROM THE ARTIST:
Art exhibition opening. This is the first time I am showing my work at a larger scale! I have been working for a couple of years now on a series of pictures from around Austin; places that are being torn down, altered or just places that I find attractive and beautiful or somehow interesting. I work with color pencils on paper.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
JANNA SAMMON
I am mother. wife. artist. working daily to create my life in as many small steps as it takes. Trying my hardest to laugh. play. listen. trust and let go every step of the way. Some days are certainly easier than others. One thing is for sure, I will always have parts of this badass little girl inside.
XO,
Janna

ARTIST STATEMENT //
At times, we have that inner voice compelling us to plan ahead, rush to the next task so we can check off those boxes, or stick to the routine so as not to rock the boat. Experimenting with alcohol inks commands me to be in the present moment and extinguish that voice as I respond and surrender to the viscous story unfolding in front of me. There is a natural, intuitive conversation that takes place between myself and the medium, as I explore feelings of liberation, transformative growth and taking chances.
PROCESS //
Alcohol Inks are a relatively new medium in the fine art world. The inks come in dropper bottles and are applied to a heat-resistant smooth surface. Varying amounts of rubbing alcohol are poured to dilute the pigment, and the flow of the ink is directed by a heat emboss tool that blows hot air. It is a bit of a science experiment depending on the order of application, the flow of the ink, and the direction and closeness of the hot air. The beauty of the finished product is the result of a give and take between artist and medium, where influence transcends control.
